The card -- an electronic identity card with security features in the form of a contact microprocessor 'smart' chip card -- is the basis for an e-government initiative that links all government agencies through networking and provides convenient and versatile services to citizens, the ministry said in a press release.
A total of 1,548 different types of government applications can now be made using the CDC card, which citizens have used over 20 million times since its launch in 2003, according to the ministry.
The government began accepting applications for CDC cards on Apr. 30, 2003, and it completed the integration of all 374 household registration offices around Taiwan into the system by June of the following year, the ministry said.
The card can now be used for a wide range of services, including income tax submission, vehicle registration, labor insurance and pension matters, driver's license application, and household registration, to name a few, according to the ministry.
The ministry said that the issuance of more than 1.5 million cards illustrates the concrete achievements of the government's promotion of the e-government services initiative.
It said that the services offered under the CDC card program will be expanded and that it is currently in consultation with various government agencies to join the program, adding that the expanded services will attract even more citizens to apply for the CDC card in the future.
