EChart pulls together patient information from a number of sources. Currently, it collects information on medication dispensed, immunization records, patient demographics and laboratory results and houses it in one place for quick and easy access by healthcare professionals.
Dr. Harold Nyhof is one physician using eChart. He said the biggest advantage of eChart is the time it will save doctors and patients by amalgamating a patient's medical history.
"EChart allows me to quickly determine what medication and dosages my patients are taking. This has a very positive effect on patient safety as it reduces the potential for errors or adverse reactions bet ween medications," says Nyhof.
EChart Manitoba provides authorized health-care providers with a consolidated view of key patient health information. This information includes: prescriptions filled at retail pharmacies through the Drug Programs Information Network (DPIN); immunization histories recorded in the Manitoba Immunization Monitoring System (MIMS); demographic information, including personal health identification number (PHIN), bir th date and address, from the Manitoba Provincial Client Registry (CR) system; and laborator y results from participating laboratories.
Ultimately, Nyhof said it's in patients' best interests to have eChart working on their behalf. "I can determine what immunizations my patients have had and avoid duplication when necessar y. I can also give immunizations that are required in a very timely fashion."
"I can also access some laborator y information on my patients electronically without having to search through a pile of paper results. The time saved by using this electronic source allows me to have more time with my patients."
Over time, eChart Manitoba will be available to more health care providers at more facilities.
