Nova Scotia's nine district health authorities and the IWK Health Centre hope to reduce costs, be more effective and provide better patient care by sharing more services.

The DHAs and the IWK issued a request for proposal Wednesday to examine possible improvements by better sharing and standardizing administrative and support service delivery.

"The Shared Services initiative is about seeking opportunities for innovative, responsive and cost-effective services to the public," said Pat Lee, CEO of Pictou County Health Authority and executive sponsor for the project.

The DHAs and IWK currently share a range of administrative, support and clinical services. For example, a single group purchasing organization for all DHAs/IWK is improving buying power. Other provinces such as New Brunswick, British Columbia and Ontario have also implemented shared services.

The request for proposals is for consultants to review and draft an implementation plan for improvements and savings in six services. Key considerations will include cost reduction and service improvement potential as well as potential economic impacts.

The consultants will choose the six services from 13 potential services, including supply chain/material management; library services, health records; registration and booking; bio-medical engineering; laundry; payroll; information technology and telecommunications; central sterilization; general administration; human resources; finance; and food services.
