Selkirk's ER is now the first site in the Interlake to boast a new electronic health record system, known as eChart Manitoba. Provincial health minister Theresa Oswald announced the system in March.
According to the Interlake Regional Health Authority, eChart provides authorized healthcare providers with a consolidated view of their patient's information from a number of sources, including current prescriptions, immunizations histories, demographic information and lab results.
Dianne Mestdagh, the IRHA's South East region District Director, the feedback from the staff at the Selkirk hospital has been positive so far.
"eChart is a system that pulls together patient information from a number of sources," Mestdagh said in a release Friday. "(And it) provides this information in one place for quick and easy access by healthcare professionals."
Diamond Kassum, Chief Medical Information Officer with Manitoba eHealth, noted that electronic health records would ultimately be a benefit to patients.
"With eChart, a health care provider has immediate access to reliable patient information to support and improve the quality of clinical decisions, diagnosis and treatment," Kassum said. "In addition, that information can be shared seamlessly across the continuum of care provided to a patient. Healthcare facilities and providers recognize efficiencies because less time is spent searching for information from other health care sites."
Kassum's comments were echoed by Mestdagh, who said now doctors will have immediate access to a patient's medical history – an important timesaver, especially in urgent situations.
"Patients will be assured their key health care history is available to health care providers in the right place at the right time," Mestdagh said. "As we know, accessing up-to-date information is critical especially in the case of an emergency."
Over time, eChart Manitoba will be available to more health care providers at more facilities, the IRHA noted. For more information on eChart Manitoba, visit www.connectedcare.ca/echartmanitoba.
