Drug-information systems, which are part of electronic health records, allow pharmacists and health-care providers to electronically and securely access records of a patient’s prescription medications. The system, which Canada Health Infoway is under mandate to standardize across the country, also provides a full and precise medication history helping to prevent potential or harmful interactions that might occur.
“By providing health-care professionals with the information they need to support their clinical decisions, drug-information systems are improving medication safety and effectiveness,” said Ruth Ackerman, president of the Canadian Pharmacists Association, in a statement.
Canada Health Infoway, a federally funded organization that was founded in 2001 and charged with helping provinces and territories for the purpose of creating health information-technology systems. The $436-million tally and report were compiled by Deloitte in funding in its last budget.
“We expect that number to increase over time as drug information systems are more widely used in the country, and we get more experienced with their use,” said senior vice-president of clinical adoption and innovation at Infoway, Jennifer Zelmer.
