The initiative, called Apps4Ottawa, is funded from a group called Open Data, which represents the city governments of Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto. The group was formed to find innovative ways of sharing city data.
There are five theme categories in the contest available and the top entry in each – as selected by citizens – will win $5,000.
Entries opened Wednesday and will close Jan. 3.
The city is opening up its data upon the recommendation of a 2007 eGovernment taskforce, which said the public and business sector require information customized for their needs.
