The City showcased key improvements to its website that provide more citizen-centric tools to residents. Mayor Larry O’Brien and Executive Director of Business Transformation Services Stephen Finnamore highlighted some of the new web features that give easy access to information that residents want and plans that support the Report of the Mayor’s Task Force on eGovernment.

“I have always said Ottawa is a leader in e-technology and I am pleased that staff are continuously finding ways to use technology to better serve residents and enterprise,” said Mayor O’Brien. “It’s clear from Web metrics and feedback that the City’s e-media and IT staff are getting it right. The GTEC Distinction Awards nominations are affirmation from our peers in all three levels of government.“

The web-based applications nominated in the Government Technology Exhibition and Conference (GTEC) Distinctions Awards are:

  • Spotlight – the City’s bilingual one-stop shop web-based calendar promoting Ottawa's dynamic arts and culture scene

    • ottawa.ca improvements - the redesign of a number of ottawa.ca features that make the website more accessible and responsive to the needs of all residents
    • e-Footprint - a Web-based application that allows large developers to submit documentation, and monitor and track building permit applications

“In 2007, the City’s website received more than 5.3 million visits, up from nearly 5 million visits in 2006. Well-timed and accurate information has become a key enabler for the public and businesses to get the right information when they need it, whether it is to register online for recreation programs, find out about the next flu clinic, or participate in an online public consultation,” said Steve Finnamore. “Our goal today was to highlight our technological achievements and our plans to maintain a leadership role in information technology. We are confident that our strategic plans and vision are well-aligned with the priorities identified in the Report of the Mayor’s Task Force on e-Government.”

The showcase also profiled the following technological achievements:

  • Ottawa Talks, an interactive tool for online public consultations

  • RSS news feeds, now available for popular, frequently updated ottawa.ca a pages

  • Browsealoud, which improves website accessibility for persons with reduced vision

  • Careers website, which now has personal job profile features such as Current Listings, Manage My Stored Resumés, CareerAlerts!, My Job List, My Personal Info – making easier for the people to apply

  • Ottawa Public Library – Kids’ section, an interactive website where kids can blog and post reviews

  • OC Transpo Travel planner and maps – where transit users can view google maps and locate the bus stops in their area

  • What’s developing in your neighbourhood? where residents can find out about development applications in their neighbourhood

The Report of the Mayor’s Task Force on eGovernment is available online.
