Canada’s e-government, which has been rated as among the best, offers all three levels of online services, publish, interact and transact, a rare combination in any country. Whether it is for paying taxes, planning travel, paying bills and booking health resorts; funding startups and catering to the human resources needs of businesses; or sorting out immigration issues, www.canada.gc.ca seems to have a solution for all. The portal has three audience-based gateways. While one is for information and services for general Canadians, another is for non-Canadians. The third one is for the Canadian business.

‘‘These gateways were developed to respond to users’ needs and to the government of Canada’s desire to make online information readily available and easy to find,’’ according to the portal.

Among the latest additions in Canada’s online efforts is the launch of its municipal e-government resource centre at http://egov.amcto.com. The Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) announced the launch of the municipal e-government centre internet site recently.

According to a Canada Newswire report, the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has financially assisted the AMCTO site. Technological help has come from ASi Technologies.

The site is expected to promote effective and efficient municipal government and build a new knowledge base on leading e-government topics. This supports the association’s goal towards municipal excellence.

A step which will help the government’s e-initiatives, the site will be of use to municipalities regardless of their population size, geography or level of electronic service delivery or e-government experience.

What does the site offer? Links to existing municipal sites and sites in other jurisdictions to identify best practices and innovative initiatives in e-government; document library that reflects current e-government research, experience and best practices; information exchange through the e-government discussion forum.

The five guidelines that the site is working on include facilitating two-way citizen engagement or digital democracy; ensuring connectivity and broadband network; online internal services for streamlining and automating internal decision-making and program delivery processes; online services

Delivery to the public 24X7; and strategies to improve the ways in which business is conducted.

AMCTO is a non-profit association for municipal professionals in Ontario. With over 2,200 members, the AMCTO is the largest municipal professional association in Ontario.

The tech-provider for the AMCTO site, ASi Technologies, is an information technology professional services firm based in Toronto, with clients across Canada. Established in 1999, ASi develops web-based applications to promote integration of data and services.
