Korea's ranking in the United Nations' global e-government readiness index went up eight notches this year, compared to last year, making fifth place and topping the Asian countries, the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs said on Monday.

According to the ministry, the UN Global E-Government Survey 2004 praised Korea's successful implementation of the integrated e-government system. The top place was dominated by the United States with 0.913 points, followed by Denmark (0.904), the United Kingdom (0.885), Sweden (0.874) and Korea (0.857). Next came Australia (0.837), Canada (0.836), Singapore (0.834), Finland (0.823), and Norway (0.817).

The e-government readiness index, produced by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the American Society for Public Administration, rates 191 U.N. member countries according to e-government readiness based on website assessment, telecommunication infrastructure and human resources.
