Transforming Government since 2001
Taiwan, Singapore, the United States, Canada, Monaco, and China are the top performing "electronic" governments, according to a recent global survey. Korean government websites ranked 32th, showing improvement from last year’s 87th, according to research of government websites in 198 countries conducted by the Center for Public Policy at Brown University of the United States. Brown University has been annually conducting the e-Government project since 2001, and according to this year’s results, 21 percent of global government institutions are providing online services, which shows a big increase from last year’s 16 percent.

Darrell M. West, director of the center's e-government project evaluated the web sites in 24 different categories and listed them. The top five of the list include Taiwan, Singapore, the U.S., Canda and China. Other countries such as Australia (7th), Germany (9th), Hong Kong(11th), New Zealand (12th), Italy (13th), U.K. (14th), France (18th), Israel (19th), Indonesia (20th), Belgium (26th), Holland (27th), Japan (29th), and Denmark (31th) also placed higher than Korea.

The criteria for evaluation included diverse factors including electronic publication, database, privacy security, online service, and overall e-governmental activities were evaluated separately.

Research showed that 62 percent had links to databanks, but only 8 percent offered security services.

This research was conducted on 1,935 international governmental institution web sites from June to August.
