Seongnam Becomes First Korean City to Reach World Smart City Awards Finals for Two Consecutive Years
- Competing on the Global Stage with "Human-Centered Mobility Services"
- Showcasing Advanced Urban Innovation Models at the Seongnam Pavilion
Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Shin Sangjin) will participate in the "2025 Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC 2025)" to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from November 4 to 6. For the first time in Korea, Seongnam has advanced to the finals of the prestigious World Smart City Awards for two consecutive years.
The Smart City Expo World Congress, organized annually since 2011 by the City of Barcelona and Fira Barcelona, is the world’s largest smart city event. This year, under the theme "LIVE BETTER," cities, companies, and research institutions from over 140 countries will participate.
At the event, Seongnam will operate its own pavilion, the "Seongnam Pavilion," covering 120 square meters. Together with companies participating in the "2025 Drone Demonstration City Project" - including Baylis, Systech, Barons, and Preneew - as well as local company Darisoft, Seongnam will showcase its advanced technologies and urban innovation models.
To support participating companies in expanding overseas, the city will provide practical assistance such as overseas marketing and pre-event training, booth rental and equipment support, partial support for exhibition item shipping costs, on-site interpretation and promotional support, and arranging meetings with international buyers.
Notably, Seongnam is the only Korean local government to reach the finals in the mobility category at the "World Smart City Awards 2025." Under the theme "Human-Centered MaaS (Mobility as a Service)," Seongnam will compete for the grand prize against major cities from around the world on the Fira Barcelona Gran Via Auditorium stage.
Seongnam’s competitors include the "ShuttleMare" on-demand shuttle service promoted by Rimini in Italy and Sant Cugat del Vall?s in Spain, the "Dosy" eco-friendly mobility platform for women in Cairo, Egypt, and the "CITYROVER" AI-based traffic management system in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada.
Among these, Seongnam has drawn attention for proposing a citizen-centered integrated MaaS platform to bridge the transportation gap between the old downtown and the new city, presenting a futuristic urban mobility model that connects public transportation, shared vehicles, autonomous shuttles, and drone delivery.
Following last year’s achievement of winning the Grand Prize in the Innovation category at the "World Smart City Awards 2024" for the "Innovation for Hope" project, Seongnam has once again reached the finals this year, becoming the first Korean city to advance to the World Smart City Awards for two consecutive years.
Mayor Shin Sangjin stated, "Seongnam’s advancement to the finals for two consecutive years is a testament to the global recognition of our shift from technology-driven to people-centered urban innovation. Through this expo, we aim to widely promote the Seongnam-style smart city model to the world and further strengthen our global cooperation network."
