Transforming Government since 2001
The government plans to allow telemedicine in the country's free economic zones (FEZs), a ranking official said Wednesday, a move partly aimed at attracting more foreign investors to the country.

In a special forum with foreign investors, Kim Jae-hong, the vice minister of trade, industry and energy, said the government will use the country's FEZs as a testbed for telemedicine and a new type of health care service that also combines medicine with tourism.

"The government will provide FEZs as a testbed for new health care service, such as telemedicine, that combines medicine with information technology and tourism," he told the forum, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication and information technologies to provide clinical health care at a distance. South Korea has yet to allow the practice of medicine from a distance.

The country has been working to attract foreign hospitals to its FEZs, but to no avail. The use of telemedicine could allow foreign investors here to receive medical services from doctors in their home countries.

The vice minister also introduced plans to attract foreign schools to FEZs, under which the government will provide additional support to those undertaking joint research or offering joint programs with local colleges or universities.
