Korea and Japan will sign an agreement on e-government cooperation and technological exchange later this month, according to a government source.
Korean IT companies have sold electronic government systems to Japan's local governments since 2004, but it will be the first such deal between the central governments of the two countries.
Korean IT companies have sold electronic government systems to Japan's local governments since 2004, but it will be the first such deal between the central governments of the two countries.
Kazuhiro Haraguchi, Japan's minister of internal affairs, is scheduled to visit Seoul late this month to sign the memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.
"The MOU will be about sharing e-government system management know-how, technology transfer and exchange of human resources between the two countries," the government source said.
"Japan is one of the leading nations in information technology but has faced problems of inefficiency in establishing and managing e-government systems due to overlapping investments by central and local governments."
Tokyo has shown interest in the Korean e-government system, which has straightened out similar problems. It hopes to acquire the Korean technology that integrates the e-government systems of central and local governments, which can be directly applied to Japan because the two countries have similar administrative systems.
"The MOU will speed up the entry of Korean systems and IT manpower into Japan," he said.
Korea has the world's best e-government system, according to a United Nations survey of 192 countries in January.
