The second edition of Oman International Trade & Exhibitions' (OITE) Smart Cities & Smart Cities summit explores roles of AI and IoT in advancing economy Industry 4.0 Summit, a part of Comex Business, began on Tuesday at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
It was inaugurated by H E Dr Yahya bin Nasser al Khusaibi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Legal Affairs.
Held under the patronage of the Information Technology Authority (ITA), over two days this year's summit addresses the latest initiatives in manufacturing, education, urban development, cognitive city planning, use of Internet of Things (IoT) in the oil and gas industry and advanced solutions for Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the logistics and healthcare industries. The theme is 'AI and IoT for advancing the National Economy'.
Dr Bader Salim al Manthari, deputy CEO for Infrastructure & eServices, ITA, said that the sultanate is ready to invest in Smart Cities with Oman Broadband network providing high-speed Internet that creates the essential conditions for enabling Smart Cities. Steps have been taken to link 18 governmental websites and work is under way to include more than 46 other websites in order to facilitate data exchange and services integration. In addition, efforts are being made in the eGovernment transformation plan culminating in the launch of over 700 eServices.
He added, 'We have recently witnessed the cooperation of a number of government entities to launch the first Smart City in Oman based on innovative technologies and applications to deliver high quality services and improve citizens' living standards.'
The opening day had key speeches including the 'Essentiality of Smart Cities for a Diverse Economy' by Fadi Nasser of Omantel; 'Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning' by Khaled Mostafa, Oracle; 'ICT implementation for Oman's Smart City Development' by Abdulaziz Jaafar from Ooredoo, among others. Interactive panel discussions were held on 'Smart City Initiatives in Oman' and 'Oman's Readiness for the fourth Industrial Revolution'.
