Smart cities, drones, robots, cloud services, small-medium start-ups and 3D printers ruled the 36th edition of GITEX Dubai that concluded recently at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The five-day technology event which was attended by students, tech-enthusiasts, businessmen and entrepreneurs was inaugurated by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammad bin Rashid al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and chairman of Dubai Executive Council.

Held under the theme, 'Reimagining Realities' the event saw participants from 150 countries. The event also saw 4,000 companies and 230 speakers.

Nasser Balushi, who runs a computer hardware shop in Muscat said, “This was my first visit to the GITEX and I am very impressed as well as inspired.

“I was looking forward for options in cloud service. Huawei offered me some. Cloud is the next move and there is a big possibility in the region and mainly Oman owing to the steady rise in SMEs.”

Talking about the smart city, Space Lee, vice president-public relations, Middle East region from Huawei Technologies said, “A smart city is necessary because it empowers people. There is knowledge and information available at your fingertips.

“For example, farmers will be able to know the exact weather and when to sow the seeds if connected with the Internet. This can be very useful in growing quality crops.”

Safder Nasir, regional vice president of Smart Cities, Huawei said, “The GCC is doing excellent in the art of smart cities where government agencies are tying up with several small and big enterprises. Even Muscat is on the right track which promises a huge potential. Muscat stands out and mainly in the e-Governance sector.”
