The Information Technology Authority (ITA) continues preparations for the registration stage of the Sultan Qaboos Award for Excellence in eGovernment 2014, scheduled to begin in July and continue until the end of September.

To explain details of the fourth edition of the award, the ITA held a workshop on Tuesday where more than 120 participants, representing more than 45 government and private companies and SMEs took part.

It started with a presentation by Shaima Hamdan Al Mahruqi, Projects Specialist at ITA. She went through the award’s history since its inception in 2010.

In the first edition, the award was only for government entities and in 2012 the big private sector organisations were given the chance to compete with government institutions in two categories, namely: Best Public Mobile eService and Best Public eService.

This year the door is open for SMEs in two categories: Best eSolution and Public Mobile E-Service.

Sangeetha Sridhar, Business Content Consultant at ITA, gave a presentation on the award categories.

To touch upon the security aspects in the registration and the projects that will participate in the award, Dr Badr Salem Al Mandhari, Director General of Information Security at ITA, gave a presentation on the best practices in participating is such awards.

Mandhari explained the importance of project quality through excellent preparation and the need to understand the standards and requirements as they are the basis for evaluation process.

All Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-related SMEs in Oman that are registered with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and are classified under the ICT category can nominate their solutions for the award.

The eligibility criteria for SMEs include: SME must be operating within Oman for at least one year, project maturity should be more than 6 months, every SME can participate with only one project under each category: eSolution or Public Mobile E-Service, the eServices registered should have been developed and provided by any private or public sector organisation or to any NGO serving public service and follow definition of SMEs as per the Ministry of Commerce definition.
