Transforming Government since 2001
The communications sector in the Sultanate is one of the promising sectors as it provides investor-friendly laws which regularise investments in this vital sector, especially when the Sultanate is going ahead in its plan to implement e-government in all the transactions and services.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Ross Cormack, CEO of the Omani-Qatari Telecommunications Company (Nawras) said that the company after seven years of its existence has managed to make steady strides in providing excellent services which meet the requirements of the growing customer base.

He said when Nawras was granted licence to provide fixed line services in 2010, it launched a wide range of services. The company always develops and updates these integrated services. He added that one of the unique features of Nawras is that it stared the other way round compared to other telecom companies which usually start with fixed line services first.

He said after getting the fixed phone licence, Nawras developed a comprehensive vision for the services in the Sultanate which aim at making the broadband available for to 90 per cent of the Sultanate’s population by 2018. “After 18 months from the launch of the boardband service, using WiMax technology, Nawras managed to reach 87 per cent of the houses in the Sultanate,” he added.

“Nawras subscribers stand at 1.9 million by the end of 2011. The number of fixed telephone subscribers now stands at 27,000.” The coverage by the company network now stands at 98 per cent and the coverage for the 3G at 53 per cent compared to 87 per cent of families for the board band, he added. As for the new services that will be launched by the company, he said that in 2007 the company launched 3G services and now tries to expand this service to most of the wilayats in the Sultanate. He added that the company is now testing 4G services.

As for the roaming agreement, he added that the company has 500 roaming deals with various operators in 175 countries around the world. As for the rates of the services, he affirmed that Nawras provides many services at excellent rates, packages, in addition to the discounts on these packages every now and then. He pointed out that 75 per cent discount over roaming service in the Gulf is more than that offered by Qtel in Qatar and Mobily in Saudi, Al Wataniyah in Kuwait and Ittisalat in the UAE.
