Transforming Government since 2001
Working hours of Civil Status personnel, both morning and evening shifts, have been increased.

Lt.Col Ali bin Saif Al Marboey, assistant director general of civil status, said that this decision was taken due to the increasing pressure of work since the start of this year.

The Civil Status Department has also been activated in the wilayats of Ibri and Buraimi, apart from the wilayats of Seeb, Sohar, Rustaq, Nizwa, Salalah and Sur.

The General Administration of Civil Affairs monitors the registering of civil details of citizens and residents, including births, marriages, divorce and deaths. The department also registers the birth and deaths of foreigners residing in the Sultanate.

It also issues supporting documents for citizens and residents, including birth certificates and death certificates, apart from identity and residence cards.

The latest initiative has contributed to easing work pressure in these departments and shortened the waiting hours for citizens and residents in its offices.

On the agreement that was signed by the Inspector General of Police and Customs for supplying new civil cards for citizens and residents, Al Marboey said that this agreement is part of the larger programme involving the transition to the new civil IDs and to make services more accessible and safer for citizens and residents of the Sultanate.

Such identity cards ensure the confidentiality and integrity of the data. The new card also involves technical features like doubling the size of the memory compared to the current civil card, which would allow the electronic chip to download extra applications services.

This will help citizens and residents to complete their transactions in government and private agencies.

This will also improve the health programme of the Royal Oman Police in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Information Technology Authority

The official added that the security features of this card include the electronic signature and storage of footprint to provide a high level of security in the data.

There are no additional charges levied for availing these facilities provided by the ID card.

On the growth of modern e-services, he said the e-services provide security and also shortens the waiting time.

The most important facility is provided at the electronic gateways at Seeb International Airport to facilitate the travellers and to ensure the flow of passenger traffic at the airport.

It will also ensure accuracy in documenting passenger data, and provide a security solution to prevent illegal exit or entry into the country.

About the role played by the mobile unit of the Civil Status Administration, Lt.

Col Al Marboey said that the unit is a mobile integral registering station for the issuance of identity cards and residence cards targeting remote areas in the governorates.

On the measures taken in case of lost identity cards, he said that the loss of the identity cards should be reported to the nearest Department of Civil Status office.
