Transforming Government since 2001
The Information Technology Authority (ITA) yesterday organised a seminar at Muscat InterContinental Hotel on modern e-government trends. The seminar, which targets directors-general and department heads in charge of e-government, was presided over by Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Sports Affairs Minister and Chairman of the ITA.

Al Sunaidy said in a statement that the seminar aims at activating the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos on the setting up of specialised departments for the service of the public. The departments are established on practical grounds and they are tasked to listen to the demands of members of the public, follow up the complaints and the progress of services rendered to the public, Al Sunaidy added.

He explained that yesterday’s meeting was meant to take the e-government sector to the next stage by utilising currently available technologies. The action will be carried out with the participation of houses of expertise, said Al Sunaidy, noting that the Sultanate now has good e-government technologies and has completed the government web and information security systems.

The minister pointed out that, as per cent statistics, there are 4 million mobile phone owners in the Sultanate who log into the Internet. This means that there are various means for communications, especially for those who require the services at reduced prices.

Dr Salim Bin Sultan al Ruzaiqi, ITA CEO, delivered a speech in which he said that communication with individuals will be enhanced through modern electronic solutions that provide interactive channels between the government institutions and the citizens. The ITA works to develop the system’s performance and services in a way that meets the actual needs of the society, he added.

Al Ruzaiqi added that offering employment to 50,000 job-seekers will enhance professional performance at the institutions at which they will join. The authority, he explained, considered raising the capacity of youth to prepare them to be efficient in the specialised fields of IT. A panel discussion has been already held with IT officers at government institutions to study this issue and explore the best means to provide training courses for the new employees specialised in IT.

He proposed to enroll the new employees in the new communication links set up at government institutions in response to the Royal directives of His 1307883232419464700 Majesty Sultan Qaboos so that they can contribute to managing communication links with the individuals by using the modern technologies.

He pointed out that the electronic sites for the government institutions have become the interface through which many citizens can communicate with the government. The ITA signed a contract with the Danish Institute of Technology during the period from November 2010 to May 2011 to provide the consultancy services for the development of the e-government in the Sultanate.

After the speeches IT experts from the Danish Institute of Technology presented working papers on three main e-services, digitalised participation in discussions and social networks and their role in communicating with the citizen, as well as easy use and borrowing.
