The sultanate’s choice as the venue of the event is considered an acknowledgement of its growing success in the delivery of e-Services to citizens and residents.
The three-day meeting, from December 21, will also feature an exhibition on e-Governance projects from the GCC countries.
The meeting will end with presenting the first e-Gulf Award that will recognise excellence in the delivery of e-Projects and e-Services in the Gulf.
“Being the first host is a unique honour for Oman, which has made great strides in the information communication technology (ICT) landscape in terms of infrastructure, e-Services, legislation and literacy,” industry expert Sangeetha Sridhar said.
Oman was nominated to host the event at a meeting of the GCC ICT authorities held in Bahrain in June 2008, when it was agreed to organise a three-day conference to discuss the challenges facing e-Governance and to keep pace with global ICT issues.
“The initiatives undertaken by the IT authority focuses on transforming the sultanate into a knowledge-based society with the use of ICT and to implement e-Oman, Oman’s national IT strategy,” Mohamed Nayaz, Director, Advisory Services, Ernst & Young, said.
E-Oman comprises a wide range of the initiatives and services that are designed to electronically transform the government.
It is aimed at improving the efficiency of government services, enhance the activities of businesses and empower individuals with skills and knowledge in order to meet society’s needs and expectations and to direct Oman towards becoming a knowledge-based economy.
Industry experts feel the conference will lead to a closer cooperation in the e-Government initiative of the GCC countries. “International organisations and ICT business community can exchange and share ideas and experiences in the provision of e-Services through this conference,” Sridhar said.
Over the past three years, Oman’s Information Technology Authority (ITA) has implemented key initiatives under the e-Oman strategy like the e-Government services portal, which was recently launched.
