Oman’s police stole the limelight on Saturday night in the first ‘e-Oman Award’ that aims at recognising distinguished performance in the delivery of electronic services by government agencies, winning two first prizes and one second.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) website won the top position in the ‘e-content’ and ‘e-project’ categories and was runner-up in ‘e-service’.

The Muscat Securities Market took one first and one second prize.

The winners were announced and presented with their trophies and citations by Sayyid Khalid bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, in the presence of a gathering of dignitaries including
Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi, Secretary-General of the National Economy Ministry.

The annual nationwide competition to encourage excellence by public sector organisations in using IT is the brainchild of the Information Technology Authority (ITA) as part of its drive to promote ‘e-culture’ in the country. All government organisations and institutions were invited to take part in the contest.

“The ‘e-Oman Award’ aspires to encourage government institutions to continuously enhance their performance and streamline their e-services and recognise their excellence and achievements in this respect,” ITA CEO Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqi said addressing Saturday’s audience.

“We are driven by an ambition that this award will be a contribution to set up a quality transition in e-services that will be eventually enhancing the position of the Sultanate locally and globally in information technology,” he added.

A total of 59 submissions were reviewed for 15 e-services in five categories - 15 for e-services, 16 for e-content, 13 for e-project, eight for e-economy and seven for e-maturity. In the two-fold selection process, the jurors first reviewed all entries along with documentation that the contesting ministries and organisations provided as background information.

In the next stage, the jury reviewed the submissions that made it to the second round, challenged and collectively selected the top two submissions for the e-Oman Award.

In a few special cases, third place finishers were selected to receive a special mention certification.

In the e-content category, the ROP website took the top spot, with the second place going to the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources Website.

The first and second position winners in the other four groups were: e-Project - ROP’s National Registration System, Ministry of Education’s Education Portal; e-Maturity - Ministry of Manpower, MSM; e-Service - Muscat Municipality’s SMS Parking System, ROP’s Traffic Offence Payment; e-Economy - Mobile-based Stock Price Application System of MSM, Cheque Imaging System of the Central Bank
Of Oman.

The Ministry of Higher Education’s ‘Admission System’ and the Civil Service Ministry’s e-recruitment system won ‘special mention’ in the e-project and e-service groups.

Ruzaiqi said that government organisations in Oman had made “great progress” in offering e-services and interactive channels. “They have worked with Information Technology Authority to set up national digital infrastructures and make rapid strides ahead towards digital Oman,” he added.

Recently, the SMS recruitment Applications project of the Royal Court Affairs (RCA) was chosen as one of the five ‘best world practices’ in the e-government category in a global competition organised by the World Summit Awards (WSA).

The same project was also a winner of the Arab e-content award for e-government. Earlier, the same award was also won by Oman’s Higher Education Admission System (HEAC).

Also recently, Oman reached the 39th ranking in e-government readiness globally in a report published by the World Economic Forum report.
