Transforming Government since 2001
Oman will take a key step in its campaign to introduce e-governance when one of its largest ministries launches an automated clearing system on Saturday enabling people to pay their municipal and water bills through credit cards.

The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources said under the scheme, being implemented in cooperation with a local bank, citizens and residents could pay bills and fees for all services rendered by the ministry through a credit card (Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club).

The services include building permits, health certificates for commercial and industrial establishments, retail outlet licence, drinking water, well drilling and all other fees. Payees will not be charged for the services.

The ministry will provide processing machines at municipal offices and also prepaid cards. The project is part of a drive to computerise municipal transactions, a spokesman for the ministry said.

The agreement for introducing the new system was signed here on Wednesday by Hamad bin Suleiman Al Wahaibi, Under-secretary for Regional Municipalities, and Abdulrazaq Ali Issa, BankMuscat’s Chief Executive.
