Transforming Government since 2001
Oman hopes to generate 3,000 new jobs within three years during which time all government entities will have their presence in cyberspace and at least four organisations will have web transactional facility, says a study carried out on behalf of the government. This was announced at a presentation - "National IT Strategy" - held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Consultants Gartner have formulated the National IT strategy for Oman.

The report also predicts that within three years, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will also attract three major investments by ICT companies.

Rajha bint Abdul Amir bin Ali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Economy for Develop-ment Affairs, who made the presentation, said Oman, with its achievements over three decades, possesses ambitious plans to benefit from the opportunities available.

"The e-government is considered a basic element for the digital society and it will be useless if citizens were unable to benefit from its services," she said.

Rajah said the company appointed to carry out the study made adequate recommendations, which would allow Oman to switch over to an e-government.

She said among the important recommendations in the study was to upgrade the current information technology system, encourage a shift from cash to electronic payments, install a government e-payment portal.

The study also recommends that the Central Bank of Oman expedite installing an electronic system for money transfer.
