Transforming Government since 2001
Almost one-third of users of the government built public WiFi network in Hong Kong are dissatisfied with the limited coverage, according to survey results announced Friday by the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association and the Hong Kong Wireless Development Center.

But the good news is the percentage of users not happy with coverage dropped from 49.6 percent in 2008 to 29.6 percent this year.

In 2009, the two organizations conducted 503 random interviews by telephone and 105 interviews on street, with the objective of comparing changes in WiFi landscape before and after the introduction of Gov WiFi in the first quarter of 2008.

According to the organizations, 31.5 percent of WiFi users in Hong Kong use the GovWiFi network available for access in government facilities such as libraries, sport centers, and parks. Among the GovWiFi users, 64.6 percent access the network from libraries.

"Survey results are encouraging with 10 percent increase in general public's usage of Gov WiFi services," said Ken Fong, chairman of Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association & Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre.

Government weather and traffic info sites most visited

Among the various e-government applications, weather inquiry and traffic inquiry are the most popular.

Survey results indicated that 54.5 percent of all Internet users access the weather inquiry service and 21.5 percent of users make traffic inquiries at least once a week.

Overall Internet penetration in Hong Kong rises from 71 percent in 2008 to 74 percent in 2009 while that of WiFi surges from 18 percent in 2008 to 28 percent in 2009, survey results revealed.

Besides, Web-browsing, at 24.3 percent, and email, at 22.6 percent are the two most population applications among all WiFi users, according to the results.

In a separate development, the Hong Kong Wireless Development on the same day signed an MOU with Jiangmen 3G Application Industrial Base together with five other parties inclusive of: Information Office of Jiangmen Municipal, Pengjian District People's Government of Jiangmen City, China Mobile, China Telcom and China Unicom to further foster partnership and new business opportunities.

"We are very pleased to partner with HKWDC with an aim to promote more 3G value-added services and applications to be developed in Hong Kong to our citizens," said Chen Jia Lin, Vice Mayor of Jiangmen People's Government.

"HKSAR government is fully supportive to this MOU as it provides endless opportunities for local industry players to develop innovative 3G applications to be used in Mainland China," said Samson Tam, Legislative Councilor (Information Technology). "Local players will benefit from such an enormous market size while mainland Chinese users can enjoy unique services from Hong Kong."
