Transforming Government since 2001
The UAE has launched what it is calling the world's first store for smart government applications through Android and iOS platforms.

The store features over 100 smart applications developed by local and federal agencies and has been launched in partnership and coordination with Google and Apple.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, was briefed on the new shop and the next steps in the smart government initiative which aims to be completed by mid 2015.

Sheikh Mohammed said in comments published by news agency WAM: "The aim is to make smart services part of the daily life for all population, and more accessible and direct. The more services are smart, the happiest people become."

He called for an increase in the number of smart services available in the new store and encouraged people to try them.

The report did not say whether there was a charge to use the apps.

Earlier this month, Sheikh Mohammad revealed the strategy behind plans to transform the emirate into a "Smart City".

The strategy features six key pillars and 100 initiatives covering transport, communications, infrastructure, electricity, economic services and urban planning.

Under the strategy, 1,000 government services will go smart in the next three years.

Sheikh Mohammed said the "gigantic project" aims to touch the lide of every citizen in the country.

He first announced the Smart City plans in October last year, under which government services would be "accessible, quick and efficient", using hi-tech smart devices.

The Smart City project will enable the public to deal with government departments using their smart phones "any time, any day of the year".

The project has evolved from the previous e-Government programme of Dubai which was launched in 2001.
