The Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure (AD-SDI) Program group recently received a delegation from the Fujairah Statistics Center (FSC) on behalf of the Abu Dhabi Systems & Information Centre (ADSIC) to share its knowledge and expertise in spatial data and geographical information systems. A four-day workshop was conducted to impart the visiting delegation with the best approaches and practices for using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for statistical computation. The FSC representatives were provided with comprehensive information on statistics-oriented GIS applications.
The ADSIC group discussed the vision and strategy adopted by Abu Dhabi e-Government, followed by a well-defined presentation on the AD-SDI program, its activities, tools, developed geospatial applications, and program-driven mechanisms. For its part, the visiting delegation explained the work and responsibilities of the FSC.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Economical Development then talked about the contributions of Spatial Data Infrastructure to the geographical coding (geocoding) of business licenses and the use of spatially approachable services recently adopted by the Department in collaboration with AD-SDI. The workshop also included a visit to the Statistics Center - Abu Dhabi (SCAD) to gain better knowledge on the uses of GIS technology across statistical operations, also touching on the statistical analysis tools and mechanisms employed at the Center. The visit concluded with an extensive discussion on the benefits of the event and plans for future cooperation between both parties.
"In line with Abu Dhabi's vision to build a knowledge-based government, we at ADSIC are pleased to share our expertise and knowledge with other local and national entities," said Abdul Karim Al Raisi, Strategy & Planning Department Manager, ADSIC. "This will help leverage and further boost experiences by developing strategic partnerships to support the development of competencies and infrastructure across all GIS-related segments and even beyond."
The Fujairah Statistics Center was first established under Emiri Decree No. (1) of 1997 as the Department of Statistics and Planning, and later on become Fujairah Statistics Center under Decree No. (6) of 2009. The Center supervises the statistical system of the emirate and is the only official source of statistics. Last year, it conducted Fujairah's largest local statistics update, covering surveys of the local population as well as residential and commercial facilities.
