The Emirates Identity Authority will open more registration centres throughout the UAE next month as part of a new three-year strategy, said a senior official.

Darwish Al Zarouni, Director General of EIDA, said the new centres will be added to the present seven.

He was speaking at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi to introduce new EIDA strategy to its staff from various emirates in the presence of EIDA representatives.

The existing centres have registered more than 200,000 individuals as per the latest survey conducted in May.

"Everyone recognises today that the Population Register and ID card Programme are pioneering national projects aiming to enhance the level of econ-omic and social development in the UAE; apart from being the corner stone of e-Government," said Al Zarouni.

"The ID card provides protection to all UAE residents by securing the confidentiality of their information, authenticating their identity and facilitating their government and non-government transactions."

On the content of EIDA's new three year strategy (2007-10), Al Zarouni explained that the strategy is a practical tool to achieve the Authority's goals and objectives with the clear performance indicators. The pilot stage of many of the agreed plans and projects (concerning IT systems and programmes, telecommunication networks, registration centres, etc) have already started in preparation of the official launch of the strategy.

He said the new strategy includes 17 objectives, 26 executive policies and 34 projects.

"We made sure to involve the largest possible number of the authority's employees in the preparation for the strategy," said Al Zarouni. Employees have attended training courses and workshops for strategy preparation.
