Total security is vital with the country on the dawn of a fully-electronic age, said Central Informatics Organisation Under-Secretary Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalla Al Khalifa. Eventually everyone in Bahrain will be carrying electronic Smart Cards, with all their passport, CPR, driving licence, health and education records, to allow them instant access to essential government and private sector services.
The electronic government project will link all ministries to each other and the outside world via the Internet, bringing dangers with the advantages.
Protecting all government and personal records will be a national priority, said Shaikh Ahmed.
The newly-launched Government Data Security Project will involve the use of the most advanced technology to thwart hackers, spies and computer viruses that could disrupt or crash the system.
It will consume 20 per cent of the entire e-government implementation budget, said Shaikh Ahmed, who did not disclose the cost. Tenders will be out soon for the data security system.
