Transforming Government since 2001

With the Central Government’s deadline for completing Smart City projects set to expire on March 31, 2025, Belagavi faces a daunting challenge—five newly sanctioned projects and five long-pending works remain incomplete. The big question is: Can all 10 projects be finished before the deadline?

Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over whether the Smart City deadline will be extended again. While local authorities believe an extension is likely, the official confirmation from the Central Government is expected by the end of March.

The Smart City Scheme Timeline

Launched on June 25, 2016, the Smart City initiative was originally slated for completion within five years, by June 2021. However, delays—primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other administrative hurdles—led to multiple extensions. The most recent deadline was June 30, 2024, but this was later revised to March 31, 2025. Even with the extended timeline, many projects remain unfinished.

Newly Sanctioned Works Under Smart City

  1. Kakti: Road construction, sewerage systems, and installation of decorative lighting.
  2. Kakti: Construction of a bus shelter and two water kiosks.
  3. Kakti: CCTV cameras will be installed on the police station premises.
  4. Vijayanagar: Installation of paver blocks, decorative lamp posts, drains, and an underground drainage channel.
  5. Sadashivnagar: Road construction and other infrastructure development.

Pending Smart City Projects

  1. City Bus Station – Modernization work is yet to be completed.
  2. Heritage Park – Stalled due to administrative delays. (Vaccine Depot)
  3. Aviation Gallery – Work remains unfinished.(Vaccine Depot)
  4. Art Gallery – Construction halted.(Vaccine Depot)
  5. Indian Rural Life Museum – Progress slowed down.(Vaccine Depot)

A significant number of pending projects are linked to the Vaccine Depot, where work was halted for a year and has not yet resumed due to various reasons. Efforts are now being made to restart these stalled projects. Additionally, the five new projects in Kakti, Vijayanagar, and Sadashivnagar have been launched using the remaining funds from the Smart City scheme.
