The Punjab Government has announced to start the system of e-challaning of vehicles in four major cities, including the holy city, of the state.
The traffic police here have geared up for the launch of the facility. Apart from Amritsar, the project would be launched in other three major cities — Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali. The online challaning system would be commencing from January 26.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed the development while adding that the Amritsar traffic police are geared up for it.
“Initially, the facility would be started from seven intersections where high-tech CCTVs are already working to check offenders. These are Sant Singh Sukha Singh (SSSS) Chowk, Lawrence Road Chowk, Crystal Chowk, Canal Office Chowk, Amandeep Hospital Chowk, Session Chowk and Ranjit Avenue T-point Chowk.
“If anybody violates the traffic norms such as jumping red light, crossing a zebra crossing, over-speeding, the high-tech CCTV cameras installed at the intersections would identify the offender by way of checking their registration number plate. The challan would be sent to the violator directly on his mobile or their home address by post just like in Chandigarh,” he said. He said besides helping in identifying traffic violators, the CCTV cameras would be a great help in regulating traffic.
The CCTV cameras were installed under the Smart City Project. In October 2022, the Amritsar Smart City Limited initiated setting up of the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) project, which was aimed to establish a state-of-the-art surveillance system with 1,168 CCTV cameras installed at 409 locations across the city.
The Rs 91-crore project included 50 face detection cameras, 10 LED screens and a public alert system at 50 chowks. It has been almost a year when the project was completed. It was awaiting the nod from the government. The company hired by the Amritsar Smart City Limited will look after the operation and maintenance work for four years.
