The Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL) has begun a tree-planting initiative along the roads, aiming to lower the temperature by up to 2 degrees C in the state capital.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that in alignment with sustainable development objectives, planting trees along roads remains the sole effective solution to maintain lower temperatures.
“We are starting the green tunnel road concept in Panaji to achieve this goal,” he told reporters after launching IPSCDL’s Tree App at Dr F L Gomes Garden.
IPSCDL CEO Sanjit Rodrigues said the entire plantation drive will help to develop green tunnel roads in Panaji in the coming years. “We are leveraging digital tools to make urban tree care accessible and effective for everyone in Panaji. We are working with Tree Care India, which will share its expertise on tree management and enhance biodiversity,” Rodrigues said.
Giving an example of trees located along D B Marg, Sawant said that proper management can help them survive for centuries. “We have trees on D B Marg and other roads that are 200-300 years old. We do not want to cut any trees. We are carrying out plantations at new locations while also planting at the sites where trees died; we are planting saplings of the same species that earlier existed on the same spot,” the chief minister said.
Rodrigues said that as many as 1,004 saplings have already been planted across the city and their data has been uploaded on the app. More saplings are expected to be planted in the coming days.
He also said that IPSCDL will conduct regular monitoring of these saplings to assess their growth and identify potential hurdles.
Earlier, Sawant also attended an urban tree management workshop at Dr F L Gomes Garden organised by IPSCDL along with Tree Care India (Environmental Services) and others.
The participants were given hands-on training on tree health assessments, safe pruning techniques, pest management, and planting tips for nurturing trees in urban landscapes.
