The civic body will install 300 cameras across the city, in addition to the 1,400 already installed, to monitor 100 locations under the Smart City Mission. The cameras will have direct connection with the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) at the MC zone D office, Sarabha Nagar.

Officials said that sites have been finalised and required infrastructure has been installed at over 70% locations. Officials are working on developing a network to link the cameras with the ICCC and police control room. They are already monitoring vehicle movement in almost all the main chowks of the city and are working on developing a system to issue online challans for violations like dumping of waste, encroachment etc.

The civic body has installed GPS in its own vehicles, the movement of which is being monitored at the ICCC. Sources said that officials have been told to scan usage of fuel by MC vehicles and make manual entries of fuel consumption. CCTV cameras will also monitor garbage lifting.

An official claimed that installation of infrastructure is already near completion at selection locations and installation of CCTV cameras will begin. Underlying the need for CCTV cameras, he said that the project would be completed in another six months. He also claimed that the ICCC would help the police to keep criminal activities in check as it was linked with the police control room.

Additional commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal confirmed the move and said, “This is an important phase of the project. In the next few days, we will go ahead with installation of CCTVs.”

The locations identified include sewage treatment plants at Jamalpur, Bhattian and Balloke, fire stations at Gill Road, Hambran Road, Focal Point, Sunder Nagar and central fire station, Gandhi Nagar, Sunder Nagar, New Madhopuri, Central Jail, Ayali Khurd, Jawaddi bridge, Vijay Nagar, Saggu Chowk, Sangowal bridge, Gaushala Chowk, Kailash Cinema Chowk, Bank Colony, Kirpal Nagar, Kakowal Road etc.
