The Smart Cities Missionlaunched in 2015, is an initiative to drive economic growth and improvethe quality of life of people by enabling local development and harnessingtechnology as a means to create smart outcomes for its citizens.

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr NaraChandrababu Naidu inaugurated several smart city projects worth IN ₹390 crores(approximately US $55.57 million) in Visakhapatnam on 23 August.

Almost three years ago, after Visakhapatnam was selected forthe Smart CitiesMission, several projects were proposed, and most of them are on track.

The Smart City Mission is an initiative that was launched by thePrime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi in 2015.  According to the SmartCity website, cities accommodate nearly 31% of India'scurrent population and contribute 63% of GDP (Census 2011). Urban areas areexpected to house 40% of India's population and contribute 75% of India's GDPby 2030. This requires a comprehensive development of physical, institutional,social and economic infrastructure.

The Smart Cities Mission is an innovative initiative to drive economic growthand improve the quality of life of people by enabling local development andharnessing technology as a means to create smart outcomes for citizens. NineIntegrated Command & Control Centres are already operational in the cities of Ahmedabad, Kakinada,Visakhapatnam, Nagpur, Pune, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara and Bhopal.

In Visakhapatnam, a number of projects that were launched in the first andsecond phases of the smart city framework planning are almost complete.

Among the projects are the standalone solar street-lightingproject, the 2 MW floating solar plant in the Mudasarlova park, and the AllAbilities Park.

The stand-alone solar street lighting stretchesout from the Coastal Battery to the Park Hotel and was completed with a totaloutlay of IN ₹8.72 crores (approximately US $1.2 million). About 340 solar streetlight poles along the city’s beach road.

Mr Nara Chandrababu Naidu will lay thefoundation for the development of 20 smart street projects including multi-levelcar parking, sewerage project, round-the-clock water supply and a sports arenain the area-based development (ABD) part of the city.

The smartstreets project includes the development of 20 roads spanning 19.5 kilometres,with a total outlay of IN ₹164 crores (approximately US $23.3 million).

Based on the Complete Streets policy, the roads will be safe forall users including pedestrians, bicyclists,motorists and transit riders.

The floating solar power plant in the Mudasarlova park willproduce around 2 MW of solar power. The project was undertaken by the GreaterVisakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVMC).

Another project is the All Abilities park, which was designedto help differently-abled children play and learn on the beachfront.

The work on projects worth IN ₹363 crores (approximatelyUS $55.7 million) has begun and work worth IN ₹120 crores (about US $17.1 million) has been completed.

The tendering processes are over for projectsworth IN ₹368 crores (about US $52.4 million), and smart city projects worth aboutIN ₹477 crores (approximately US $68.1 million)are in the tendering stage.

Other convergence projects are in different stages ofexecution.

Tenders have been finalised for the sports arena and workwill be launched by Mr Nara Chandrababu Naidu. The sports arena has severalindoor and outdoor sports facilities.
