Transforming Government since 2001

Tirupur, the knitwear hub that is among four Tamil Nadu cities in the latest round of smart city entrants, wants to provide underground sewerage and increase green cover.

Commissioner M. Ashokan said e-governance, better water supply, health and public transport are also on the cards.

But Tirupur Exporters Association president Raja Shanmugam said a satellite township and migrant worker housing would help overcome growth pangs. Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tiruchirapalli are also in the list.

Tiruchi’s old city is to get a boost using retrofitting, out of the total outlay of ₹1,137.55 crore. Smart tourism around the Rockfort and along the Cauvery river, multi-level parking, walkways, and smart feeder transport are planned.

But on the eve of the second anniversary of its entry, the Coimbatore Smart City Limited is just preparing to call for expression of interest to identify a technology for smart street poles with cameras and sensors for the city.

CSCL has asked a Chennai-based consultant for a feasibility report on its proposals, said an official. CSCL has installed air quality monitoring devices, and is set to launch a mobile app for people to send feedback on the project, sources said.
