SASTRA University holds workshop
The success of Smart City creation and management depends on real time data collection and analysis, speakers said at a workshop on “Smart City - Challenges and Opportunities,” organised by the SASTRA University at Thirumalaisamudram near here on Friday.
The Centre for Development Studies, attached to the School of Management, SASTRA University, organised the workshop.
Jose Polackal, industry leader for Government and Education Process, IBM, Bengaluru, stressed the need for integrating the functions of various government agencies to successfully implement smart city projects.
Consolidation and convergence of ideas from across various sections of the society is essential.
Simon Selvaraj, Assistant Director, JLL Property, consultant for Tiruchi Smart City Project, explained that the project had three stages. Selection of probable location based on public opinion and field study was done at the first stage. Face-to-face meeting and sharing of opinion through social media and opinion poll through portal was used for the purpose.
At the second stage, the consultants would help the respective corporations prepare and submit the smart city proposal to the Central Government.
The project would be apprised and approved and then the corporation would execute the project by inviting tenders. Annually a sum of Rs.100 crore will be individually sanctioned by both the State and Central Governments to the corporation over a period of five years. The corporation will get a total of Rs.1,000 crores with which they could develop the existing city or a part of the city or create a satellite city.
Private investment would be attracted to support government funding, he noted.
Later, the participants divided into eight groups to discuss various themes of smart city concept including waste management, infrastructure and housing, water management, governance, transportation and logistics, communication and network, recreation and entertainment and energy management.
Some of the smart ideas that emerged during the discussion were sustainable waste management, energy prediction using data analytics, smart water consumption and management, prepaid energy, e-bus stops, e-governance etc. Those ideas were consolidated in the next session.
More than 100 delegates participated in the deliberations and contributed their ideas. Convener of the workshop and Dean, Sastra University, V. Badrinath, co-conveners V. Vijay Anand and S. Selvabaskar spoke.
