Transforming Government since 2001

The Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ) is all set to begin the citizens mass contact programme from Tuesday in which it would meet city residents and would seek their suggestions and ideas to be incorporated in the Smart City Proposal (SCP) to be submitted to the Ministry of Urban development by December 15 this year. The citizens would be asked to poll their top five areas on priority basis from the 16 selected by the MCJ to be developed under the smart city mission.

While informing this, Mayor Sunil Jyoti said that around three teams have been formed specially that would be looking after the contact programmes in ward areas.

While the team under Additional commissioner Jasbir singh has been given the charge to contact residents from ward number 1 to 20, Joint Commissioner Rajeev Verma will look after the contact programme from ward number 21 to 40. Similarly, Assistant Commissioner Gurvinder Randhawa has been asked to reach out to residents from ward number 31 to 60.

He said besides 25 educational institutes, many social welfare organizations, NGO, volunteers and resident welfare organizations have also been roped in to make this programme a huge success.

"Without the citizen's participation, we will not be able to achieve our target of getting the city included in the top 20 cities. MoUD will select the city primarily on the basis of the extent the citizen's have participated in the poll process," said Mayor.

MC Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Khehra said that the citizens would be asked to describe a 'smart' idea that they have seen or heard in some other city (anywhere in the world) or have thought of that they would like to see replicating in their own city.

He said the SCP would be a citizen-centric document. "A key part of this process is consulting the citizens. We will initiation face to face interaction with individuals, resident welfare organisations, NGOs, corporate and even media houses to understand what they want from the smart city mission," said Khehra. He also urged the city residents to post their opinions on the MoUD website mygov.in and can also see the suggestions posted by the residents of other cities. The MCJ has planned to finish the mass contact drive by October 15.

After all, smart city is for the betterment of the citizens only," said Verma.
