These hotpots are said to cover 17 cities and will connect 37,455 village panchyats across eastern UP. The project initiated under the NOFN, aims at providing broadband connectivity to 250,000 villages across India. In UP (E), the project covers 582 blocks spread over 48 districts.

State-run telecom operator BSNL has been mandated the task of setting up 141 Wi-Fi hotspots in the Uttar Pradesh (East) telecom circle, Business Standard reported.

These hotpots are said to cover 17 cities and will connect 37,455 village panchyats across eastern UP. The project has been initiated under the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), which aims at providing broadband connectivity to 250,000 villages across India. In UP (E), the project covers 582 blocks spread over 48 districts.

NOFN was approved by the Government of India in 2011 and has since been extending internet access to Gram Panchayats for the purpose of e-governance, e-health, etc.

So far, BSNL has successfully provided internet access in Sarnath and Varanasi (where Wi-Fi hotspots now cover six Ghats). As per the plan, such spots would also span across the major tourist places as well as historical/national monuments, the report said.

A standard Wi-Fi hotspot requires an investment of Rs 10 lakhs. While talking to a Business Standard correspondent a BSNL official said, "We are in the process of identifying these free Wi-Fi spots and the equipment for the same is being procured."

Meanwhile, the state-owned telco has been upgrading its 3G infrastructure in UP to offer better voice and data services. To accelerate national rollout and promote the launch of such services in rural areas, TSPs (Telecom service Providers), ISPs, etc are given a non-discriminatory access to the NOFN.
