He was delivering the presidential address at the 7th Alumni meet of the Computer Science Department of the University of Madras on Sunday.
The V-C said that several sectors like banks had seen considerable development with the help of computer-based applications.
Adding that the government must take up initiatives to promote such efforts to develop other fields as well as through e-governance initiatives, he said, this would also ensure employment for the new computer science students passing out of colleges.
The Vice-Chancellor added that students of computer science had a great opportunity to take the country forward.
They should look at ways to develop applications that cater to local needs, he said.
Delivering the keynote address at the event, Ambuli Nambi, senior consultant with the TCS, said that students looking at the IT field must be equipped with more than just expertise in programming.
“Companies surely look at programming skills. But that is not the only thing they want from their employees. When one is working at an IT company, one must look at providing solutions to clients. There is a human element involved. It is about shaping people’s lives through the applications,” he said.
He asked the students to explore different areas and fields and not restrict themselves to textbooks.
“Textbooks are only a trigger for you to explore more. While textbooks are definitely the foundation, students must not be restricted to it. Look at learning something new every day, exploring various things keep yourself up-to-date. Try to make yourself valuable,” he added.
