Transforming Government since 2001
The State Telemedicine Resource Centre (TRC) coming up at the SCB Medical College and Hospital for monitoring and guiding telemedicine facilities in the State is being pushed to be upgraded into a Regional Resource Centre (RRC).

The RRC would function under the National Telemedicine Network and be responsible for monitoring the telemedicine activities in eastern region of the country. The eastern States have been left out as the six RRCs are located at PGIMER, Chandigarh; AIIMS, New Delhi; KEM Hospital, Mumbai; JIPMER Pudducherry and NEIGRIHMS, Shillong covering other parts of the country.

The process for evaluation of the capacities here has started with the Deputy Commissioner and Nodal Officer, Telemedicine, of Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry Dr NK Dhamija on Friday visiting the Central Telemedicine Complex. He would assess if the facilities are suitable for declaring the centre as an RRC in telemedicine for eastern region. The complex is set to be commissioned soon. With high speed connectivity and a 10 terabyte storage capacity, the complex would act as the central node and information depository for the Odisha Telemedicine Network.

“Odisha has taken the lead in implementation and extension of telemedicine services to the grassroots. It has installed state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities for OTN, which can be well used for driving telemedicine networks in the neighbouring eastern States,” State Nodal Officer BN Mohapatra said.

With upgradation into RRC, the complex would not only monitor telemedicine activities in the Eastern States but also would be responsible for undertaking training programmes for telemedicine personnel. As the telemedicine network expands across the country, there is a rising demand for skilled manpower in the niche area or telehealth that combines technology with medical sciences.

The complex would have multi-point video-conferencing facilities linking mentor institutions with several assistance seeking ones at one go. There will be specialised units on e-health, hospital information system, biomedical informatics, medical multimedia and knowledge management.

Dr Dhamija also interacted with the district level hospitals through OTN connectivity at the SCBMCH. He attended the second annual conference of the Telemedicine Society of India (TSI), Odisha branch, inaugurated by Health Secretary PK Mohapatra, and delivered a lecture on the issue.
