The e-governance project of the Transport Department of Punjab has once again drawn the attention of other governments. This time, the State Government of Odisha and Uttarakhand, have shown keenness towards implementing this project in their respective states as well.
Last year, in December, a delegation of officials from Kenya visited the Punjab transport department office to study about the automation of its road transport sector.
The project on the 'Automation of the Road Transport Sector' has been implemented in the 22 districts of Punjab. The implementation of this project enables people to procure their driving licenses and registration certificate in the form of smart cards.
As per the spokesperson of the Punjab Transport Department, the commercial transport sector can now access the facility to pay taxes online thereby saving their precious time and undue harassment in transport offices. Online registrations of vehicles through authorized motor vehicles dealers have also started.
The College Principals have also got the authority to issue learner's driving license. This initiative has been very successful, as per the spokesperson. According to him, it was serving the dual purpose of issuing driving licenses in the institutions on one hand and creating awareness regarding safe driving amongst the students on the other.
A state data centre has also been established at the Headquaters of the Transport Department and it is linked to all the district headquarters. This will ensure more transparency in the working of the department.
