Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (eg, networks, servers, storage, applications, and services), that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.
Speaking during the inaugural session of ICTACT Bridge 2013 – Chennai Edition, Anand said that cloud computing would enable the government to leverage cloud computing for effective delivery of e-services.
Interestingly, this comes in the wake of the Department of Electronics and IT (DeitY) and GI Cloud Task Force coming out with Government of India’s GI Cloud Strategic Direction Paper earlier this month. The ‘GI Cloud’ is the Union Government’s initiative to enable the government to leverage cloud computing for effective delivery of e-services.
As per the paper, the GI Cloud is envisaged to comprise of multiple National and State Clouds. The agencies responsible for operating and managing the National and State Clouds may engage Managed Service Providers (MSPs) for managing the respective cloud computing environments.
Meanwhile, Anand also said the State government is also planning to link 12,000 panchayats with broadband connectivity. He said the aim of the government is to provide services to the common man at their doorstep. He also said the State government is planning to have 2,000 additional village level entrepreneurs. He highlighted the success of ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT), an initiative of State and Union government along with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
He said it has embarked on the novel path of improving the quality of students in Tamil Nadu and many States are eager to borrow the model. The objective of ICTACT is to train the higher education teachers and students of the ICT domain, for enabling the students to become Industry ready and employable and thereby creating a new generation of talent pool which would benefit the ICT Industry in the Tamil Nadu.
The ICTACT Bridge 2013 conference is focusing on addressing issues challenging employability with a focus on 21st century skills for education, employability and entrepreneurship. Kumar Jayant, project director of Tamil Nadu Aids Control Society, stressed the need for a rethink on the education system, which is more focused on rote learning.
Advisor to Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and industry, president P Murari said there is a need for a partnership between academia, corporate and government to strengthen and develop entrepreneurship development cells in educational institutions.
David J Gainer, Public Affairs Officer in US Consulate underlined the US-India education ties in bringing out an education culture of 21st century.
