The planned centre is aimed at tele-consultations, manpower development in the field of tele-medicine & bio-medical informatics and continued medical education in the eastern and north-eastern parts of India.
The Centre shall also have facilities for training and teaching different cadres of health professionals. It will have a specialized tele-ophthalmology facility for screening diabetic retinopathy and cataract.
The centre was inaugurated by health minister Damodar Rout. Prof AK Mahapatra Director, AIIMS informed that the institute will provide specialist tele-consultation services to District Headquarter Hospitals, Sub-divisional Hospitals, Community Health Centers, and Primary Health Centres for two hours free of charge every day.
Dr Vikas Bhatia, Dean AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said the new facility shall be able to correct the health inequality prevailing in the country, as envisaged in mission statement of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
