VG Talwar, vice-chancellor of Mysore University called upon librarians to follow the basic objectives of the new education policy such as access, equity and quality in developing and managing e-resources in libraries.

He was speaking after inaugurating the two-day national conference on 'Trends in developing and managing e-resources in libraries' organized at Jnana Sangama campus of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU-Belgaum) here on Friday. The role of librarians is challenging in the era of information and communication technology (ICT), he said.

"It is experienced in the era of ICT that, the e-resources user approach is very poor. Thus librarians have to develop skills in selecting, collecting and disseminating e-resources to the users, besides organizing user training programmes, otherwise the basic objective of the concept of virtual library will be collapsed," Talawar cautioned. Meanwhile, he appreciated the recent initiatives of the VTU such as establishment of Faculty Training Center and examination reforms introduced.

SL Sangam, professor of library and information science in Karnataka University, said the advent of ICT is a boon to development of library science. VTU V-C H Maheshappa, in his presidential address, said since the last two decades, application of information technology is playing a crucial role in restructuring libraries. VTU registrar S A Kori, librarian K R Mulla and around 200 delegates from different parts of the country participated. About 175 papers on various subject areas were presented in the conference.
