To enhance the delivery of healthcare facilities to consumers, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, on Sunday, stressed the need to set up satellite health centres with telemedicine facility across the country.

“Science is advancing at monumental speed specially in healthcare particularly Genomes. Satellite centres with telemedicine are coming up in various states,” said Sibal at the launch of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s Research Center.

The aim of Ganga Ram Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research is to conduct research in the field of medicines and health problems.

“The Hospital has now established a department of research with well equipped research laboratory. Research conducted here has had a major influence on patient care in this country,” said D S Rana, chairman of the Hospital.

Talking about the several research works being done in the Hospital, Rana, said: “Some of the areas where research has helped improve patient care include early diagnosis of ventilator associated pneumonia in children. The hospital also developed a cost effective and easier method -- antigen detection method -- that enables earlier detection of dengue fever.”

According to N K Ganguli, chairperson, research, about 75 research projects are currently in progress and more than 250 research papers published every year has 70 of these in indexed journals.

The prominent areas in which research is being conducted are oncology, neonatology, gastroenterology, organ transplantation, infectious diseases, blood diseases, genetics and surgical sciences.
