Transforming Government since 2001
After three postponements, the UT Education Department is now all set to launch the government smart school, supposed to be the region’s first such institution, on April 4.

Despite the school building in Sector 53 being in place since July last year, it took the department nearly a year to complete the technical arrangements and plan the curriculum.

The entire campus of the high school is Wi-fi-enabled, and classroom teaching will be taken up by referring to e-content (e-lessons) on projector screens in all classrooms.

The UT Administration had tied up with a city-based computer networking company for developing the digital podiums which have been placed inside each classroom.

The podium has an in-built laptop screen, microphone and a connection with the projector. It will be used by the teacher who will display the audio-visual content on the projector screen for the students through the podium laptop.

However, officials indicate that the idea of setting up this particular school has more to do with balancing of the pupil-teacher ratio in city schools than incorporating information and communication technology (ICT) in teaching.

No new admissions would be made in the school for the current academic session since a number of students from neighbouring schools (which have a high pupil-teacher ratio) would be relocated to the new school.

The students from Government Model High School, Sector 41, Badheri and Kajheri will be shifted to the new school.

”Here we primarily wish to fulfill the purpose of RTE’s concept of neighbourhood schools. The students whose parents would opt for changing the school would be placed here,” said DPI (schools) Sandeep Hans.

A batch of 10 teachers has been imparted technical training at the State Institute of Education (SIE), Sector 32, who would then teach at the new smart school. Also, despite all the added facilities, there will not be any difference in fees in the new school, say the officials.

All the computer systems would be networked and controlled centrally through a server room which would be operated by trained officials. The school will also have a separate computer lab with over 20 computer systems.

As per the officials, the cost of setting up the school building is about Rs 3 crore while the technical set-up will involve approximately Rs 60 lakh.

At present, there are three fully-equipped smart schools (private) functioning in the city. These are Manav Mangal School (Sector 21), Gurukul Global School (Manimajra) and Delhi Public School (Sector 40).
