The Vadodara region of department of posts has taken the lead in launching unique identity card project in Gujarat.

On Friday, the Union government's project through which a biometric identity card - Aadhar - will be issued to all citizens of the country was launched in the city by the department of posts at Fatehgunj head post office.

The department which is an accredited agency under the Unique Identity Development Authority of India (UIDAI) will shortly start more enrollment centres to reach out to maximum citizens.

"Across Gujarat, there will be 278 such centres for enrollment of which 186 centres will be in Vadodara region that includes Panchmahal, Dahod, Bharuch, Narmada, Dangs, Surat and Valsad districts apart from Vadodara district itself," post master general of Vadodara Lt Col D K S Chauhan said after inaugurating Aadhar Enrollment Centre at Fatehgunj head post office.

"Within Vadodara district, there will be 39 centres to implement the project," said Chauhan, adding that while other centres in the city will be started in the first week of July, centres in the district will be started in a month's time.

In the city, the centres will be started at post offices in Karelibaug, Raopura head post office, Mandvi, Khanderao market, Madan Zampa, Baranpura, Race Course and Subhanpura.

The UIDAI biometric card, which carries a unique 12 digit number, will be issued free of charge. "It will be useful for opening a bank account, to obtain new mobile connection, withdraw NREGS money, obtain insurance policy and obtain ration card among others where it is required to produce identity and address proof," added Chauhan.

On the day of the launch itself, the Fatehgunj post office witnessed huge rush as many a citizens made queue to get enrolled.
