Corporators cutting across party lines raised the issue of problems plaguing the unique identification number (UID) project in the city. The civic administration was criticised for the hassles the citizens have to face during the registration process.

Termed ‘Aadhaar’, the central government scheme involves providing a 12 digit number to the citizens and also collecting their biometric data.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena corporators pointed out that people have to wait for hours together in queues, when they go for getting themselves registered for the plan.

Municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak cited shortage of machines and trained personnel to register the biometric data.

“As per the target given to the PMC, we need to register 23 lakh people till December 31 this year. In order to achieve this target, we require 351 machines but we have received only 84 such machines,’’ he said.
