In June last year, the Haryana government had signed an MOU with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for the issuance of UIDs to all residents of the state.
In Gurgaon, the city administration has entrusted the implementation of the task of unique identification to government school teachers.
This is mainly because local teachers have access to various sections of the society.
In addition to teachers, the employees of block development offices will also be roped in for popularizing the project at the grassroots level.
To kickstart the project, the state government recently instructed the deputy commissioners in various districts to form special committees in the region.
"A list comprising state government employees based in the city is being prepared. These officials will play a key role in implementing the project. For this, the employees would undergo a series of training sessions. They will later help to formulate strategies for popularizing the project," said deputy commissioner P C Meena.
In the project, every citizen will be given a 12-digit unique identification number in the form of a card. In the next five years, over 600 million unique IDs would be issued in a phased manner across the country.
Each card will have two types of information: biometric and demographic. In the section of demographic data, the card will have details like name, date of birth, address, sex and name of father/mother/guardian.
The biometric details would include 10 fingerprints, a photograph of the individual's face, among other things.
To gather both types of details, the UIDAI will rely heavily on local authorities.
"The role of state government employees is critical in explaining the project to people in the rural and urban areas," said another state government official.
The Gurgaon city administration is geared up for the project.
The main aim is to spread awareness about the project and provide manpower for its execution on the ground.
