Transforming Government since 2001
‘‘E-governance would be a thing for the elite unless it reaches the masses in remote corners of the country,” said Joint Secretary IT Shankar Aggarwal at a CII summit on Cloud computing. “For good governance of any nation, it is necessary that all decision makers are sensitive and transparent to the needs of the common man. This can be achieved by the use of Cloud computing in e-governance for meaningful and sustainable inclusive growth,” he said.

According to him, one of the biggest challenges that the country has been facing is the lack of quality education. “The emphasis should be on the application of knowledge rather than on the acquisition of knowledge and the Cloud provides a platform for the same,” he said.

Cloud computing is a mode of delivering services on a virtualized platform using the Internet, which can help broaden the reach of various services including tele-medicine and e-education to every part of the country. Though India is growing at an impressive rate of 9%, for sufficient and sustainable economic growth the elimination of poverty is critical, which can happen only by touching an eleven percent growth rate, which can be achieved only by bringing the youth into the mainstream using Cloud computing. This would help to disseminate quality education, health, finance, and such to the un-served 800 million people. Aggarwal said that the states should leverage successful Cloud initiatives and models with little or no modification, in order to expedite the process of inclusion.

Cloud computing not only eliminates the need for client organizations to invest in high cost technology equipment, but it also minimizes the risk of technology obsolescence. Sanket Akerkar, Managing Director, Microsoft India said, “The benefits of Cloud computing include innovation acceleration, competitiveness enhancement, scale and reach, and enabling inclusivity.”

“Cloud computing is gaining momentum in India with some 7,000 applications having been created by developers in India on the Microsoft platform alone and over 2,000 commercial customers for our Cloud services in India,” he added. He indicated that telecommunications, IT services, financial services and e-governance were poised to be the major drivers for Cloud adoption in India.

Dr. Ganesh Natarajan, who is both Chairman of CII National Committee on IT/ITES and Vice Chairman, CEO of Zensar Technologies said, “While IT software and services growth in India was about 6% in 2009-2010, we expect 16-18% growth in 2010-2011 which has been possible with a 4% growth in IT spending.” He shared that SMBs would dominate the Cloud market in India with a 40% CAGR expected.
