Unique identification numbers will soon become the way for payment of wages to workers of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNGREGA) schemes in Jharkhand.
The State government on Friday gave its go ahead to the Information Technology (IT) Department’s plan to modify the Unique Identification Development Authority of India (UIDAI) application so that the payments could be made through using biometric samples and unique identification numbers.
IT secretary AP Singh told the iGovernment that the payment operation would be brought to operation at two blocks, Kanke (Ranchi) and Baghmara (Dhanbad) on pilot basis by the end of this month.
“If the project succeeds, we would develop the module for regulating and monitoring other schemes like public distribution system (PDS), implementation of the mid-day meal, payments of stipend to deserving students and pension under various social security schemes soon,” added the secretary.
So far about 90,000 persons have been enrolled for UID numbers and 57,000 offered unique numbers (Aadhar numbers) in the State.
“We are contemplating to integrate MGNREGA payment scheme through UID numbers in the two blocks as we have achieved almost 100 per cent coverage there,” a senior officer of the UIDAI said.
